Led by Dr. Elodie Bouzbib and Asier Marzo, the UPNA research team has created volumetric displays that project three-dimensional graphics into the air, allowing users to interact with them directly using their hands. “We are used to direct interaction with our phones, where we tap a button or drag a document directly with our finger on the screen—it is natural and intuitive for humans,” explained Dr. Marzo. “This project enables us to use this natural interaction with 3D graphics to leverage our innate abilities of 3D vision and manipulation.”​

The Technology Behind Touchable Holograms

The system operates by projecting images onto a rapidly oscillating surface known as a diffuser. This surface moves at a speed of 2,880 images per second, creating the illusion of a solid 3D object floating in space due to the persistence of vision. By inserting their hands into this display, users can interact with the holographic objects as if they were tangible.​

This innovation builds upon previous research in haptic feedback and volumetric displays, integrating them into a cohesive system that does not require headsets or gloves, thereby enhancing accessibility and user experience.​
