​In a groundbreaking advancement, Beijing-based startup Betavolt has unveiled a nuclear battery poised to revolutionize energy consumption across various sectors. This coin-sized power source promises an uninterrupted 50-year lifespan without the need for recharging or maintenance.

Innovative Design and Functionality

The battery measures a compact 15x15x5 millimeters, achieved by integrating wafer-thin layers of nuclear isotopes and diamond semiconductors. Currently, it delivers 100 microwatts of power at 3 volts, with ambitions to enhance output to 1 watt by 2025.

Mechanism of Operation

Betavolt’s technology harnesses energy from the decay of nickel-63 isotopes, converting it into electrical power through diamond semiconductor converters. This approach ensures a stable and long-lasting energy supply, marking a significant leap in battery technology.

Safety and Environmental Considerations

Addressing safety concerns, Betavolt emphasizes that the radiation emitted by the battery poses no threat to human health, making it suitable for medical applications such as pacemakers. Its layered design prevents risks of fire or explosion, even under sudden force, and it operates effectively in temperatures ranging from -60°C to 120°C. Environmentally, after the decay period, the nickel-63 isotopes transform into a stable, non-radioactive copper isotope, ensuring no pollution or environmental hazard.

Potential Applications and Future Prospects

Betavolt envisions widespread applications for its nuclear battery, including use in aerospace, artificial intelligence devices, medical equipment, microprocessors, advanced sensors, small drones, and micro-robots. The company asserts that this innovation will provide China with a competitive edge in the evolving AI technological landscape.

As the battery undergoes final testing phases, Betavolt plans to commence mass production soon, pending necessary clearances. This development heralds a new era in energy solutions, potentially eliminating the frequent need for recharging devices and significantly impacting various technological domains.
