By increasing clock speeds and adjusting the Total Graphics Power (TGP), these modifications have unlocked notable performance gains, positioning the RX 9070 ahead of its XT counterpart.​

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 series, based on the RDNA-4 architecture, includes the RX 9070 and the higher-end RX 9070 XT. The RX 9070 XT features a Total Board Power (TBP) of 304 watts, while the standard RX 9070 operates at a TBP of 220 watts. Both models are designed to cater to high-performance gaming and professional applications.​

Enthusiasts have taken to BIOS modifications to enhance the RX 9070’s capabilities. By increasing the power limit and fine-tuning voltage settings, users have achieved higher clock speeds, resulting in improved performance metrics. For instance, tests with the ASRock Radeon RX 9070 Steel Legend model demonstrated that lowering the voltage by 100 mV and reducing the power limit by 30% decreased power consumption from 244W to 171W. Despite this reduction, the card delivered 50 fps in “Cyberpunk 2077” at 4K ultra settings, compared to the original 54 fps—a mere 7% drop. This adjustment not only maintained competitive performance but also enhanced the frames-per-watt ratio by 32%.

Conversely, increasing the power limit by 10% while reducing the voltage by 50 mV allowed the RX 9070 to boost its clock speed to 2.8 GHz, achieving 58 fps in the same game scenario. Further optimization with a 125 mV undervolt pushed the clock speed to 3 GHz, reaching 60 fps—an 11% improvement over stock values. These modifications, however, come with increased energy consumption and heat output, underscoring the balance between performance gains and thermal considerations.

The RX 9070 XT, in its reference design, is reported to achieve boost clock speeds between 3.0 and 3.1 GHz. Custom variants from AMD’s partner manufacturers are expected to push these frequencies higher, with some models featuring a TBP of up to 330 watts—70 watts above the reference specification. These enhancements are anticipated to bring the RX 9070 XT’s performance close to that of NVIDIA’s RTX 4080, with a reported performance gap of less than 5% in certain gaming scenarios.

Gigabyte’s Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G serves as an example of such custom models. While it may not match premium variants in overall performance, it offers robust power delivery and higher power limits for factory overclocking, providing greater headroom for enthusiasts seeking additional performance through manual tuning.

These BIOS modifications and custom enhancements highlight the flexibility and potential of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 series. By carefully adjusting power and voltage parameters, users can achieve significant performance improvements, sometimes surpassing higher-tier models. However, it’s crucial to consider the implications of increased power consumption and thermal output. Proper cooling solutions and a thorough understanding of the hardware are essential to maintain system stability and longevity.​
