Intel has quietly launched its Intel Performance Optimizations (IPO) program, aiming to enhance the performance of its latest Arrow Lake CPUs. Initially rolled out in China, the IPO program provides system integrators and OEMs with pre-configured profiles that adjust CPU and memory settings to boost performance without voiding warranties.
The IPO program enables modest overclocking by increasing CPU core frequencies and memory speeds. For instance, some pre-built systems have demonstrated a 200 MHz increase in core clock speeds and elevated RAM speeds from DDR5-8000 to DDR5-8400, resulting in up to a 10% improvement in gaming frame rates. Arrow Lake, officially known as the Core Ultra Series 2, was launched on October 24, 2024. These processors feature a hybrid architecture with 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores, support for DDR5-6400 memory, and integrated Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 connectivity. The CPUs are built using a disaggregated multi-chip module (MCM) design, incorporating compute tiles fabricated on TSMC’s N3B node. The flagship model, Core Ultra 9 285K, boasts 24 cores and a peak clock speed of 5.7 GHz.
Despite the advanced architecture, Arrow Lake’s initial reception was mixed, particularly concerning gaming performance. Reviews indicated that the Core Ultra 9 285K struggled to outperform its predecessors in certain gaming scenarios, with some benchmarks showing it lagging behind AMD’s offerings.
